Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain, reserving 1/2 cup of pasta water.
While the pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
Add the canned tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon, and stir in sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add chopped basil and stir to combine. Toss the cooked spaghetti with the tomato sauce, adding reserved pasta water as needed to thin the sauce.
Serve hot, topped with Parmesan cheese if desired.
